What is a Ductless HVAC Unit and What are the Benefits?
A ductless heating and air system sounds other worldly, but don’t be fooled. This mythical AC creature does exist. Obviously, it doesn’t utilize the ducts that are common for most HVAC systems. Instead, an outdoor compressor and one (or more, depending on the size of the home) indoor air-handling units are linked by a refrigerant line. The split system means that the outdoor and indoor components communicate to heat and/or cool areas of the home based on location-specific units. The indoor “heads” are linked to a heating/cooling zone, which are programmed to their own temperatures and can be adjusted independently from the other parts of this ductless puzzle.
One of the major benefits of investing in a ductless ventilation system is how easy it is to install. With that being said, keep in mind the importance of hiring a HVAC contractor (such as Georgia Air Specialists) to do the installation. Selecting the right size unit is crucial, and only a licensed, experienced professional would be able to make that call. An improperly sized unit or a unit that’s installed in the wrong location can lead to complications down the road.
Averaging between $3,000 and $5,000 per installation, ductless systems are a major investment. Factors that may affect the cost include: number of heating units and/or desired heating capacity, “manufacturer and model, geographical location, [and] refrigerant line-set length.”
The system is wonderful for older homes without a central AC unit, which is common in some of the homes in the Savannah area. A traditional HVAC system would be incredibly expensive to install or impossible, depending on the home.
- Constant Temperature
Unlike a traditional AC unit, ductless AC will consistently cool your home, keeping it at one temperature instead of cycling on and off throughout the day. During those few colder months we get, the system reverses by absorbing heat from outside and moving it inside. The temperature is also more flexible because of the zone system that ductless AC uses.
With literally the touch of a button (as most ductless AC systems come with a remote control to monitor the temperature), you can cool or heat specific areas of the home (instead of the whole building), so the savings are abundant!
- Increased Efficiency
Beyond the minimal noise that a ductless system brings, they’re also 30-50% more efficient than common central heating and air units. They cool your home faster and actually keep it comfortable!
The filters that accompany a ductless system can be cleaned and reused over and over again. By eliminating the ducts, your home’s air doesn’t come in contact with as many pollutants (such as larger allergens, dust, etc.).
You can pick and choose where to place a ductless system, which explains their popularity with older homes, office buildings, and hospitals. You can effortlessly expand the heating/cooling reach or install it in just certain areas.
